#AskOurResearchers with Dr. Lipkin

From the Community: “If I remember right, Lipkin said that sequencing has not shown any pathogens. Does he still believe there is a pathogen to be found?”

Transcription:

The fact that we have not found pathogens in most of the patients we’ve studied with ME/CFS doesn’t mean that pathogens aren’t implicated. Furthermore we have found pathogens in some people: we have found them in the gastrointestinal tract, particular populations of bacteria, and we have found that in a small subset of patients there is also evidence for viral infection. The other approach to looking for the footprints of pathogens, viruses, bacteria, yeast, and others is to test for the presence of antibodies directed against these pathogens and that’s work that is ongoing and I still think appears quite promising.
